The Competition

A number of new technologies are under development to improve the
treatment of chronic progressive lung disease that may reduce lung
fibrosis.  In addition, there are several ongoing clinical programs with
PTHrP agonists/antagonists that may become available for
non-pulmonary indications, but nevertheless have potential off-label use
in the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis.  For example, interferon
gamma-1b is believed to be superior to corticosteroids based on
preliminary studies, although its cost ($100,000 per patient year) is
prohibitive for most individuals.
